  1. ÇCHKDSK won't run with Magic Folders installed.  We disable ChkDsk because it 
  2. can delete all your invisible files.  For more information select "Help" 
  3. at the main screen. 
  4.  
  5. ChkDsk is the only program we've tested that causes a problem.  The 
  6. following have been tested and work fine with Magic Folders: SCANDISK, 
  7. DEFRAG, Norton Disk Doctor, and Norton Speed Disk.  
  8.  
  9. Do you use any other disk fix or defragmenting utilities not listed here? 
  10. üYou must test your disk fix and/or defragmenting utilities to see if 
  11. they're safe to use with Magic Folders.  To do so, run them when your 
  12. Magic folders are visible and invisible.  DO NOT FIX ANY REPORTED ERRORS.  
  13. If more errors are reported when your folders are invisible then do one 
  14. of the following: 
  15.  
  16. 1.  Remove the utilities (so you can't use them) or remove Magic Folders.
  17.  
  18. 2.  Use only one account in Magic Folders (just use the Master Account 
  19. already created) and move the offending utility into one of your 
  20. invisible folders.  That way it can only be run when all folders and 
  21. files are visible, and thereby safe. 
  22.

  25. é Magic Folders makes any folders (directories) you choose and all the 
  26. files in those folders completely invisible to others. 
  27.  
  28. These invisible folders and files can't be deleted, viewed, modified, or 
  29. run.  For all practical purposes they don't exist.  Use Magic Folders to 
  30. protect your finances, taxes, business and personal documents.  Not only 
  31. will others not know these files exist, they won't be able to 
  32. accidentally delete or modify them either.  With Magic Folders you can 
  33. turn over your computer to your children or your co-workers without 
  34. worrying if they'll delete, modify or view important files.

  36. Yet, just enter your password and you'll instantly have complete and 
  37. normal access to all your folders and the files within.  There's no need 
  38. to un-hide each file or folder individually.  And Magic Folders is 
  39. totally transparent.  No one need know your invisible folders/files even 
  40. exist.

  42. If you wish, you can establish 5 different accounts so everyone using 
  43. your computer can create their own invisible folders that only they have 
  44. access to. 
  45.  
  46. If you share your computer you need Magic Folders.  Use it to protect 
  47. files you don't want others to delete, modify, view, or use.  Keep your 
  48. important files safe.  Protect them with Magic Folders!

  50. "Magic Folders" works in Windows 3.x and Windows 95.  It does not work in 
  51. Windows NT or 32 bit file access of Windows 3.11 (Windows for 
  52. Workgroups).

  54. You will need a blank floppy disk handy for use during installation.

  59. is shareware.  You may evaluate it without obligation for 30 days.  If 
  60. you choose to continue using it beyond the 30 day evaluation then you

  64. warranties whatsoever.  In no event shall RSE Inc. be liable for any loss

  78. âTo register via modem from outside the US or Canada please enter those 
  79. numbers that must be dialed to place a direct call to the United States.  
  80. These numbers often include a prefix to place an international call 
  81. followed by the country code for the United States.  If you want to put 
  82. delays in your prefix dialing string, use a comma for every two second 
  83. delay needed.

  85. Note: A successful registration may not be possible if a good modem 
  86. connection cannot be made due to line quality or delays.  In addition, 
  87. international calling rates can be expensive, but in most cases will 
  88. still be less than the $4 mailing surcharge added to overseas orders that 
  89. are registered by other means.

  92. When you registered you received a file called MFD.SYS which tells Magic 
  93. Folders you're a registered user.  MFD.SYS has been customized with your 
  94. personal information (See "Registered to..." in the "Registration" Menu) 
  95. and is for your use only.  Giving MFD.SYS to others is illegal.

  97. Make a backup copy of MFD.SYS as it is the key to your registration.  
  98. As long as it's in the same directory as MAGIC.EXE Magic Folders will be 
  99. registered.

  101. One registration benefit is free updates for six months, provided you 
  102. download them.  You can get the latest version at our WEB site: 
  103. "www.pc-magic.com"   Just download the latest version and extract it 
  104. into the directory where the current version is located.  
  105.  
  106. Note:  If you charged your registration to your credit card the charge 
  107. will be to RSE Software.  Thank you for your support.
  108. àOne or more of the files needed to restore the last registered version 
  109. are missing.  If you got a disk from us when you registered (modem 
  110. registrants don't unless they request one) then you can re-install that 
  111. version.

  113. A better option is to visit our WEB page at: "pc-magic.com/", go to 
  114. the "Previous versions" page and click on the latest version created 
  115. within six months of your registration.
  116. åYou can have up to 5 Magic Folder accounts.  Each account can create 
  117. their own list of magic folders that are invisible to all other 
  118. accounts.  However, only your "Master" account can un-install Magic 
  119. Folders and create new accounts.

  121. If multiple accounts are created, no account has access to all the hidden 
  122. folders.  Therefore you shouldn't create multiple accounts if you're 
  123. hiding an "un-safe" disk utility.  Having multiple accounts also makes 
  124. backups tougher because no account has complete access to all hidden 
  125. folders.  See "Multiple Accounts" in "Help" for more important 
  126. information.

  154. into Magic Folders should you forget your password.  It also lets you 
  155. disable Magic Folders from DOS should you not be able to use the 
  156. "Uninstall" feature within Magic Folders.

  158. To create your KeyDisk put a blank, formatted disk in your floppy drive.
  159.  
  160. What drive is your KeyDisk in?
  161. èYour KeyDisk has been created.  Remove your KeyDisk now and write the 
  162. following on its label: 
  163.  
  164. "Magic Folder KeyDisk - See README.TXT if you forget password or need to 
  165. uninstall and can't run Magic Folders."

  172. If you forget your password insert this KeyDisk, run Magic Folders and 
  173.  
  174. attempt to enter your password three times.  After the third attempt 
  175.  
  176. Magic Folders will use this disk as a key to let you in.  This only lets 
  177.  
  178. you into the Master Account.  If you forget the password to another 
  179.  
  180. account you will have to un-install Magic Folders and re-install it again 
  181.  
  182. to gain access to all the hidden folders.

  185. Can't run Magic Folders?
  186.  
  187. If you need to uninstall Magic Folders and you can't use the Un-install 
  188.  
  189. feature inside Magic Folders then boot from a system floppy, or if Win95, 
  190.  
  191. safe boot to "Safe Command Prompt Only".  Then insert this disk into 
  192.  
  193. drive A:.  At the DOS prompt enter "A:", and then enter "DISABLE".
  194.  
  195. îYou can use Magic Folders to restrict access to your computer.  With 
  196. "AutoStart" installed Magic Folders asks you for your password whenever 
  197. your computer boots.  Enter your password and your magic folders will 
  198. automatically become visible.  How Magic Folders handles incorrect 
  199. passwords depends on which of the following two options you choose.  
  200. Select "Cancel" if you don't wish to install "AutoStart". 
  201.  
  202. ìIt appears you have 32 bit File Access for Windows 3.11 activated.  
  203. Magic Folders will not work if 32 bit File Access is on.  You can check 
  204. by going into Control Panel, clicking "Enhanced", then "Virtual Memory" 
  205. and checking the "Disk Status" section.

  208. ÄMagic Folders didn't load correctly.  MF.EXE (or whatever you renamed it 
  209. during installation) needs to be run from within your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  
  210. Make sure the "LH pathname\MF.EXE" statement (where "pathname" is the 
  211. directory where MF.EXE is located) is in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and that 
  212. it directly proceeds the line that runs Windows.  If it is and things 
  213. still don't work, please send e-mail to support@pc-magic.com and 
  214. reference Err 97.
